In San Francisco, coffee shops cluster around downtown offices, college campuses and the main commercial streets of residential neighborhoods, and the independents usually close by mid-afternoon while chains stay open into the evening. Across California, drive-thru coffee stands and kiosks fill the gap in suburbs and along highways, and roasters often sell bags and brewing gear at the counter. Check the listing for hours, whether the cafe takes mobile orders, and its Google rating and recent reviews; parking is easiest at suburban locations, while downtown shops rely on street meters or nearby garages. Loyalty programs are common and worth joining if you are a regular.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 7 am–5 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (415) 416-6173. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. Its website is comptonscoffeehouse.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 383 reviews, which is a strong result for a coffee shop in San Francisco and suggests consistent service.
San Francisco is in California, on the West Coast, where the climate ranges from foggy coast to hot inland valleys, wildfire season can affect air quality in late summer, and traffic is the main thing to plan around. US addresses list the street number and name, then the city, state abbreviation and ZIP code, and San Francisco follows the same pattern; a suite or apartment number such as Ste 200 refers to a unit inside the building. The map link on this page shows the exact spot.

The Fillmore Sweep: Strategy and Caffeine at Compton’s The afternoon sun was cutting right through the glass storefront of Compton’s Coffee House on Fillmore, bouncing off the sleek wooden counters like a spotlight. It’s a busy, sharp, independent neighborhood operation—regulars spilling out onto the wooden benches outside with their dogs, while the interior runs on high-efficiency espresso pulls. The miniature anarchist and I took a spot near the back counter, positioned directly under a rather cubist, geometric oil painting of a solitary pigeon that looked like it was auditing our conversations. She was taking a tactical break from her usual high-grade pastry targets, demanding a sweet afternoon fluid instead. We laid out our orders to keep the afternoon moving smoothly. For me, a single shot of decaf espresso in a standard-issue paper cup—clean, robust, and expertly pulled with zero bitter edge. For the anarchist, an iced vanilla latte layered beautifully over thick blocks of ice. The espresso float mingled perfectly with the sweet vanilla cream, providing the exact hit of sugary momentum she required to plan her next neighborhood campaign. The layout inside is wonderfully clean

Coffee is legitimately good considering the competition of the bay area coffee scene. They have a flat white which is often rare as well so grateful. Service was fast, and I liked how customers had individual seats for their own activities like studying, calls, etc. Really nice spot near Japan town

Earl Grey latte - perfection! I’m an Earl Grey everything person (still thinking about the Earl Grey blackberry mousse cake at One65), and this one hits the mark. Compton’s Coffee House is a small, easygoing spot with both indoor and outdoor seating. It is perfect for a quick coffee or tea stop before or after a Fillmore stroll. The pastry selection is fairly standard, but the drinks are where they shine. The lattes feel a step above, with house-made syrups and consistently fresh espresso that actually comes through in the flavor.

Unique coffee shop that attracts regular customers as well as visitors to the Fillmore Street area. This place was well worth the long walk from my hotel on Van Ness Avenue. Erica provided friendly and helpful service when ordering as there were several coffee and tea options that I was not familiar with the names. I ended up with a cardamom rose latte and was fully satisfied with the choice. The place is somewhat cramped, with limited inside seating, but that is to be expected in San Francisco, and there are tables outside on the sidewalk. Compton's offers a positive experience and alternative to the chain coffee and tea bars.

December 2025 American cafe with friendly neighborhood feels. A good selection of drink options as well as single origin beans 🫘. Counter service is standard. Place has a community feel with limited seating due to a number of remote working diners. Al fresco area available.
